Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle is a prominent country house located on the shores of Loch Fyne, Scotland’s longest sea loch, in the town of Inveraray, Argyll. The castle has served as the ancestral home of the Dukes of Argyll and the seat of Clan Campbell since the eighteenth century.

The current castle was constructed in the Gothic Revival style and is noted for its distinctive appearance and setting overlooking Loch Fyne. Inveraray Castle reflects both the architectural tastes of its period and the long-standing influence of the Campbell family in Scottish history.

Visitors to Inveraray Castle can explore a number of principal rooms spread across multiple floors, which display historic furnishings, artwork, and decorative features. Highlights include French Beauvais tapestries, high-ceilinged state rooms, and a large historic kitchen complex located in the lower levels of the castle.

The castle’s interiors provide insight into the daily life, traditions, and responsibilities of one of Scotland’s most prominent noble families, as well as their wider role in national and regional history.

Inveraray Castle’s location in Argyll makes it well suited to inclusion within scenic routes along the west coast and around Loch Fyne, where visits can be combined with coastal landscapes and nearby historic sites.

Inveraray Castle is often included as part of our private castle tours in Scotland, where visits are planned within a bespoke, chauffeur-led itinerary. Access conditions and opening times vary by season and are confirmed during the itinerary planning process.
