Glamis Castle

Glamis Castle is located in Angus, Scotland, and is the ancestral seat and family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne. The castle is widely recognised for its distinctive architecture, long history, and strong connections to British royal heritage.

The castle is closely associated with Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who spent part of her childhood at Glamis. It is also the birthplace of Princess Margaret, who was born at the castle in 1930, further strengthening Glamis Castle’s place within modern royal history.

Glamis Castle is also linked to Scottish legend and folklore, including stories connected to the historical figure of Macbeth. While the setting of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth is associated with Scotland more broadly, Glamis has become part of the cultural tradition surrounding Macbeth through local legend and long-standing popular association.

Visitors to Glamis Castle can explore a range of historic rooms and learn about the castle’s architectural development, family history, and place within Scottish and royal heritage. Guided tours often highlight both the documented history of the site and the folklore that has grown around it over time.

Glamis Castle is often included as part of our private castle tours in Scotland, where visits are planned within a bespoke, chauffeur-led itinerary. Access conditions and opening times vary by season and are confirmed during the itinerary planning process.
