Blair Castle
Blair Castle stands at the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, near the village of Blair Atholl in Perthshire. With a history spanning more than seven centuries, the castle has been the seat of the Dukes of Atholl and the Murray family since the thirteenth century, making it one of Scotland’s most historically significant country houses.
Originally built as a defensive stronghold, Blair Castle has evolved over time into the distinctive white-harled building seen today. Its architectural development reflects changing styles and functions, from medieval fortress to Georgian country residence, while still retaining elements of its earlier defensive character.
The castle has played a notable role in Scottish history and was involved in several key events, including Jacobite uprisings and conflicts between Highland clans and the Crown. Blair Castle is also associated with a number of prominent historical figures, including Mary, Queen of Scots, who is recorded as having stayed at the castle during her journey through the Highlands in 1564.
Inside, visitors can explore a series of historic rooms that display collections of weapons, furniture, paintings, and artefacts connected to the Atholl family and wider Scottish history. Highlights include the Grand Staircase, the State Dining Room, and displays that document the castle’s military and ceremonial past.
The surrounding grounds include formal gardens, woodland walks, and open parkland, offering views across Highland scenery that has shaped the castle’s strategic importance and long-standing appeal. The estate also maintains traditional land management practices that reflect its historic role within the region.
