Balmoral Castle
Balmoral Castle is located in Aberdeenshire, within the Cairngorms National Park, and has served as the Royal Family’s Scottish residence since 1852. Set within an extensive estate, the castle is closely associated with the modern history of the British monarchy.
The Balmoral estate was purchased by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria in the mid-19th century. The original house on the site was found to be too small for the Royal Family’s needs, leading Prince Albert to commission the construction of a new castle nearby.
The current Balmoral Castle was completed in 1856 in the Scots Baronial style. Following its completion, the original house was demolished, with the location of its former front door marked by a commemorative stone that remains on the estate.
Balmoral Castle became particularly important during Queen Victoria’s reign and has continued to be used by successive generations of the Royal Family as a private retreat. The castle and surrounding estate reflect the monarchy’s long-standing connection to Scotland.
Visitors to Balmoral can explore selected areas of the grounds and estate during designated opening periods, offering insight into the history and setting of the royal residence. Access arrangements and available areas vary by season.
